Juniors contest Graded Tournament 2008. (Feb.2008)
During a late January weekend at the Northern, over 40 juniors from the North West took part in an England Squash graded tournament, hosted at the club.
On the Saturday, the E2 Grade was an all Isle of Man final, with the very impressive Mason McLarney (right) beating hard-hitting Jason Crease. Heswall’s Charles Job won all 3 games in his group to reach the semi, Leon Bowers made the semi without winning a game, his consistent scoring seeing him through. The Northern’s only player in the category was Matthew Fell, who, despite playing well, narrowly missed out on qualification.
In the E1 event the winner was again from the Isle of Man, Christopher Corrigan beating St. Helens Y Squash player Sam Sheen (left) in the final, LCC’s Daniel Walker and Leyland Lions' Bradley Smith were the losing semi-finalists. The Northern’s Will Kynaston found himself in a tough group, and despite winning 2 of his 3 games was unlucky to just miss out on a semi-final place.
The full group of trophy winners in Saturday's E1, E2 and D events is pictured (left).
In the D grade Southport Dragons' Joe Grove (far right) beat Northern's impressive Alex Berry in a close semi-final, before being beaten by LCC’s Anthony McCarthy in a quality final. West Lancs player Sam Fletcher played well to reach the semi, before losing to the eventual winner. Alex is pictured (left) receiving his award from Northern chairman Roy Grainger.
On the Sunday, the F1 grade saw Northern members Dalitso Mwandumba (far left) and Thomas Alman (left) play well to make the semi-finals in their first tournament.
But neither could match the eventual finalists; 10 year old James Connor (left) from Barnton winning, with Y Squash player Connor Sheen runner-up.
The F2 grade saw the 3 youngest players in the tournament, all from the Northern. 8 year old Jonathan Fell and Adam Stanton played well in their group games with Adam Tweedle (below in yellow) going on to make the semi-final. This section also produced the best match of the weekend, Scott Snaylam, apparently cruising at 20-12 up in his semi-final, was pegged back to 20-20 before winning the crucial point to beat the competetive 9 year old Jack Connor. Scott went on to lose the final 21-8 to Bradley Rigby (right) from Y Squash who was head and shoulders above everyone in the section.
Below (left) are Northern competitors Adam Stanton, Chris Burridge, Matthew Fell and Jonathan Fell, and (right) the trophy winners in Sunday's F1 & F2 competitions, along with Roy Grainger, and tournament organisers Derek Kynaston and Paul Fell.
Jessica Davis won the fair-play award on the Saturday, and Ross Thomas (left) won it on the Sunday, both showing good attitude and sportsmanship during the tournament.
