Dr John Winter. (Nov.2009)
Dr John Winter
5th Feb 1919 -
13th Nov 2009

Sporting associates of eight decades were among the many who attended a thanksgiving service, held at St.Nicholas Church in Blundellsands, commemorating the life of Dr John Winter, a Life Member and former President of the Club.

John Winter first played for the Northern Cricket Club in the 1937 season, and was a club and county hockey player and club squash champion. He also represented Waterloo at rugby, and in later years captained Formby Golf Club.

John studied medicine at Liverpool University, and would later become a consultant radiologist at Walton Hospital. Upon qualifying in 1943, John joined the military to serve as a medical officer during the war.

His contemporaries would vouch that he could have succeeded in professional first class cricket, but John returned home to continue his medical career, before a spell working in Taunton. He returned again in 1953, and two years later rewrote the local cricketing record books.

In 1955 he scored 1423 runs, which was to remain an all-time record for runs by any player in a season in Liverpool Competition cricket for over 50 years, hitting 8 centuries and averaging 88.9 in the process. When his record was eventually passed in 2007 by Carl Hey, also of Northern, John was present at the final match to congratulate Carl.

Dr John scored a total of 30 first team centuries for the club, the first in 1938 and the last in 1962, and recorded a century against every other club in the Liverpool Competition bar one, Birkenhead Park. He captained Northern in 1949-50 and 1956-57, and became a vice president of the Liverpool Competition in 2004.

President's Day beats the deluge. (Jul.2009)
Andy Davies led his president's XI to a close victory on the field, and then led the celebrations off it, along with family, and friends spanning his four decades at the club.

After an overnight deluge, it appeared initially that the celebrations might reach full flow prematurely. Fortunately, after some enthusiastic amateur groundsmanship from the lads, the game got underway, and the serious indulgences were delayed to a more civil hour.
Thanks to Andy, Lorna and the family for a most enjoyable day for all involved.

275 Years between us. (Jul.2009)
A joint celebration dinner, to mark our 150th anniversary, was held at Formby Golf Club who this year also celebrate their 125th year. The evening included past and current presidents of Northern and club captains of Formby, plus golfers from the two clubs who had played a match earlier in the day. Guests of honour were Arthur Cheetham (below left) and Austin Cartmell (below right), senior past figureheads of both clubs. Northern president Andrew Davies is pictured presenting the trophy to Formby captain James Harrocks. The event provided its many guests with opportunities to renew acquaintances spanning both clubs, and was expertly organised by Neilan Symondson.

Good Turn-out for Club Photo. (Jun.2009)
Around 160 members (you count them if you want to!) smiled for the 150th anniversary photograph. The event turned into a good social occasion also, with 'nibbles' circulating freely courtesy of our caterers, and Northern's own guest bitter launched over the bar. The photo will be hung in the clubhouse along with our other landmark photos from previous years, and many attendees took away their own copies printed on the day.
And every 150th birthday needs a cake. Our president, Andrew Davies, was on hand to cut ours.

Beth Williamson, our windsurfing ladies hockey player, is aiming for the 2012 Olympics. On Sunday 7th.June this year, we shall be commissioning a new photo, to celebrate 150 years of the Northern Club. We hope that as many members as possible will wish to feature, and be included upon this milestone for the club. So please keep the date free, and join us from 12 noon on the day.

All The President's Men, and Ladies. (Apr.2009)
"At times it looked like it might cost them their jobs, their reputations, and maybe even their lives."

This was the tagline to the 1976 film All the Presidents Men. And never a truer word was spoken as the President's men of the cricket section (mainly!) took to the artificial against the good ladies of the Hockey section in the latest President's Day hockey match on Sunday.
In a tight defensive game of 4 x 20 minute quarters there was little in it, 1-1 after 20 minutes, 2-2 at half time. But then the master stroke! Out comes the Mount Gay rum! And thanks to those well known cricketers Adam Batty, 'J' Batty, Tom Pfeiffer and John Corrin, the President's men, including the excellent past past past past past pressie (Wendy) prevailed by the odd goal in 13 ....... 7-6. It also helped that a couple of the ladies hockey players enjoyed a touch of the Mount Gay too!!

I would like to thank all those that participated, hockey and cricket alike, and especially to Maria and Harro for their, mainly, excellent umpiring! I say mainly as the current pressie is now known as the man with a wooden leg. If I was up to date that would be carbon fibre or kevlar leg.

Beautiful weather, a great game and a very well supported couple of social hours in the bar afterwards. That's what it's all about! Thanks to all.

Andrew.

Ray and Barry pot Snooker Doubles title. (Mar.2009)
The final of the 2008 Snooker Doubles Competition belatedly took place on Thursday 12th.March 2009, at the club. The final saw the longstanding partnership of Barry Hyman and Ray Shimmin take on Jeof Guilford and John Ainsworth. After a closely fought battle, Barry and Ray prevailed by 2 frames to 1.
Champions it seems also of standards of dress, Barry and Ray (left) were presented with the trophy by Mark Coutts, the organiser of the competition and Snooker Secretary.

All-change at the AGM. (Mar.2009)
Outgoing club president Peter Brinkley said his goodbyes at the annual general meeting, handing over the reins to Andrew Davies, pictured beside him.
Also standing down is our long-serving treasurer Vernon Gardner (right), along with Peter Allan our membership secretary. The president thanked both for their many years of outstanding service to the club.
Also pictured, above left, is our club secretary Stewart McMillan.
Moving into Andy's role as vice president is Bill Sarath, seen here delivering a vote of thanks to Peter for his contribution during his year in office.
One of Peter's final duties as president was to congratulate Syd Berks and Buckley Wickham, who both celebrated 50 years of membership with Northern, and were awarded life membership of the club.
There were also long-service awards for Graham Kerr, Barbara Snaylam, Dave Bourne and Liz Adams. Liz and Barbara both received gold lapel badges celebrating 40 years of membership, while Dave and Graham have each clocked up 25 years with the club.

There being no other business, the incoming president invited all to join him at the bar.
