Treasurer cheques That Number. (Sep.2008)
Our 200 Club organisers Phil Williams and Alan Murphy ran a well-attended social evening and buffet, as this year's draw reached its climax.
The President's lady drew the numbers,
and Treasurer Vernon Gardner was on hand to sign the cheques,
as two £1000 winners and six other runners-up were picked.
And finally ... the £5000 'big one' ... and the winner is ...
... Vernon Gardner.
Never slow to the bar, the ink was still wet on the paper, as the Treasurer consulted our trusty steward to order drinks all round for the club attendees.
Vernon, and wife Kate, are pictured with the Brinkleys and That Cheque.

Join the 200 Club. (Aug.2008)
The 200 Club has run within the Northern for many years, and involves a prize draw each month, culminating in 'the big one' each September with a top prize of £5000 and two runners-up each of £1000.
Apart from being a valuable fund-raiser for the club, the 200 Club also offers an inclusive social evening with free buffet on the night of the September draw.
There are currently vacant numbers, so if you are not a 200 Club member, why not join for the coming year. Entry from October is £10 per month, with a chance to win any of 64 prizes during the year.
To join, get in touch with Phil Williams or Alan Murphy, or any member of the club committees. Alternatively email the website and we'll get back to you.
The 'big one' for existing members takes place this year on Friday 5th.September, so Good Luck! ... you've got to be in it to win it!

Party Time in the Marquee. (Jun.2008)
Not quite the secret Policeman's Ball, as word seems to have got around to all corners of the club and beyond.
A full marquee of revellers enjoyed this year's Summer Ball well into the early hours.

Marquee Week kicks off with Footballing Legends. (Jun.2008)
There was a good turn-out from both club members and our corporate guests for the annual sports dinner held in the marquee.
Guest speakers were Dave Watson, Everton's cup-winning captain and former manager and coach,
and Ray Clemence who used to keep goal for Tottenham.
True blue Northern president Peter Brinkley is pictured above left, with son Mike, and Dave Watson,
while (right) Ray Clemence entertains the audience with tales of his illustrious career with England, Spurs and his previous clubs.

Compere John Nelson ensured that the evening ran smoothly,
and organised a successful raffle and auction in aid of junior sport at the club.
No expense was spared in the lavish array of style icons modeling the prizes and merchandise,
and calling round for the cash.

Thanks to all who supported the event and fundraising.

Northern Hatrick at Sefton Sports Awards. (Jun.2008)
The Club enjoyed three successes at Sefton's annual Sports Achievement Awards Dinner for 2008.
Our congratulations go to each of them.
Maria Brant led the way, with an award for her Outstanding Commitment to Junior Sport Development.
In addition to her responsibilities as ladies hockey chairman and cricket secretary and scorer,
Maria is also to be found coaching and umpiring junior hockey over the winter season,
while in the summer months she coaches junior cricket and is manager of the Under 9s cricket team.
Last season's cricketing record-breaker Carl Hey was voted Sefton's Sports Personality of the Year.
The onset of parenthood over the winter months, and the inevitable domestic pressures that come with it,
have meant that Carl is now playing his cricket nearer to home this season at Bowdon.
But the award comes as a fitting finale to Carl's contribution, both on and of the field, during his time at Northern.
Andrew Beeston was unfortunately unable to attend on the night to receive his award,
for the Veteran Sports Personality of the Year.
But after representing Northern in league squash for over 50 years,
and serving Northern, Merseyside and Lancashire in various capacities off-court,
the award was certainly no less worthy in his absence.

Roll up, Roll up, for 2 nights in the Big Top. (Jun.2008)
The Club will soon be enjoying the annual Marquee week with 2 special events planned.
Thursday 19th June - Sports Dinner with special Red and Blue guests Ray Clemence and Dave Watson.
This event is always exceptionally well supported
and it is strongly recommended that club members ensure that they reserve their place or book a table.
Ensuring that we can provide for anything around 350 seats and meals takes some planning
and knowing how many people are coming is always a good place to start.
Friday 20th June - Annual Summer Club Ball with 4 course meal and live band.
The highlight of the club's social diary. A great opportunity to dress up and enjoy live music.
There are about 350 places on the lists at present and there is also a reserve list and like the Sports Dinner
a clear idea of actual numbers is essential for catering and planning.
With that in mind the collection of ticket money will take place from 1st June, with £10 deposits securing a place.

Photo Finish for Race Night. (Apr.2008)
Maybe we need to introduce another membership category of Equestrianism because after the success of the Grand National day hosted by the squash section, the cricket section got their whips out and ran a tremendously well supported Race Night.
There were 8 races planned, although there were eventually 9, and our thanks go to each of the race sponsors and their partners, Over the previous couple of weeks, horses had been ‘sold’ to owners and had been allocated jockeys, one or two carrying a pound overweight! Again massive thanks to those who bought horses as owners or jockeys.
Congratulations to all the winning owners and for those who enjoyed an astute bet on the evening. Special mention to Karl Twin who was the only person to back the aptly named ‘One of These Nights’and collected at odds of 33:1!!! The real mention should be to ‘Lins’ because it was really her choice!
The night ran very smoothly thanks to John Nelson and his expertise, Chrissy and her staff who provided a terrific curry and chilli and Gordon, Emily and Jen behind the bar.
The cricket section would also like to take the opportunity to wish Jen all the best as she moves on to her forthcoming big event.
Finally, a very special mention and thanks to the ladies from the hockey section, Rachel, Rachael, Nikki and Jo who ran the Tote to perfection. Mind you they kept to the horse race meeting maxim of having a drink between each race!!
The event overall raised just under £800, with the Tote raising over £350 and the auction races over £150. As the event was deemed a great success, LBE (Lucan and Blert Enterprises) plan to host something similar in October or November. Weighed In!!

Fletch pops the Questions. (Feb.2008)
Participants pondered a broad range of subjects,
from the longevity of an HB pencil to the origins of the panama hat,
as the club's newest quizmaster Steve Fletcher asked the questions.
Members of the winning team Neil Scott, Dave Harrison and Kev Stevenson are pictured collecting their prize
from club president Phil Sloan.
Many thanks to Steve (left) for organising the evening.
