Changes to website e-mail address. (Apr.2007)
This is perhaps not the most riveting piece of news to appear here,
but, for the benefit of anyone else out there wearing an anorak, here goes.
From 12.May, our website providers are changing the way that they handle incoming e-mail to the website.
Previously, anything addressed to any name at northernclub.co.uk would have arrived ok (for example, JoeBloggs@northernclub.co.uk ).
In future, most northernclub.co.uk e-mail addresses that have been used previously will no longer work.
Mail will need to be addressed correctly, and a new e-mail page (
) has been added explaining how to contact the club by this method.

Anyway, what's this problem with anoraks?

Clubforce paints the Town green and white. (Apr.2007)
The club received a much-needed lick of paint over the weekend of 31st/1st,
when several dozen volunteers donned last year's (ok last millennium's) fashions for the club's annual DIY event.
The event is sponsored by ECB's Cricketforce initiative, but at Northern is supported by members of all of the sections,
under the name of Clubforce.
Boys will be boys, and attention did waiver on occasions.
But, all in all, a tremendous amount of work was done over the two days,
with painting, repairs and maintenance to the clubhouse, fences, benches and all surrounding areas.
Thanks to all who took part.

Slimline Duo waisting away. (Mar.2007)
Phil Sloan and Andy Davies like to do things together.
Ibiza holidays, slogging a cricket ball a long way, and losing thirty five and a half pounds each for charity!
They started at a joint 37 stone 7 lbs ... and finished at a diminutive 32 stone 6 lbs
... a full 71 lbs of missing blubber.
That is the equivalent of 28 cricket bats ... that's a lot of willow, as our picture shows.
Bad news for the eating houses of Crosby and Waterloo, but good news for Woodlands Hospice and the Club, who share the proceeds.

Remember back in January, when our now-President or Cricket Chairman began the new year by
thrusting a sponsorship form under your nose?
They will be sending the boys round for your pledges,
as they can no longer impose their own physical threat!
Your donations will be wonderfully well received,
and many thanks in advance of your kind generosity.

All-change at the AGM. (Mar.2007)
The club AGM saw Philip Sloan (left) take over the reigns as our new president, with Peter Brinkley (right) as his vice president.
Peter’s first official task was to pass on our thanks to Paul Davies at the end of his presidential term. Peter made special note of Paul’s contribution across all sporting fronts, particularly in youth development and accreditation, and his involvement both in cost-saving and cash-generating initiatives within the club. Well done to Paul, and thanks also to Sally, Matt and Kim for their support.

Sport England films Northern's Role Models. (Mar.2007)
Sport England 'rolled' the cameras, and Northern provided the 'models', in a DVD showcasing Northern's all-round sporting excellence,
in all of our four sports of hockey, bowls, squash and cricket.
The filming is for a DVD for Sport England on the Community Club Development Programme,
which awarded Northern a grant of around £80k to fund the Hockey Section project of 2004,
to renovate the changing rooms and add disabled facilities.
We are featured as we carry out 'Best Practise' as a hockey club and are being used as an example to other clubs.
We are one of 24 national case studies being featured on the DVD,
which will be sent to National Governing Bodies and Sport England.
We also feature because we have had an excellent increase in participation,
especially for women and girls which is seen as a disadvantaged group.

New Vice President for 2007. (Feb.2007)
This year's nominee for Vice President is a staunch supporter of the social side of the Club.
We are pleased to announce that Peter Brinkley has accepted the nomination at the forthcoming 2007 AGM.
Our best wishes to Peter, his wife is Carmel, and sons Michael and George, for an enjoyable and successful term.
Peter and his family have been Club members for ten years. As a family they are actively involved in many community organisations and have previously helped organise and run a number of social events in the Club, most notably the Family Fun Day of marquee week three years ago.
Elder son Michael made his debut in the senior cricket teams last season, and is also a rising football referee.
Peter is a keen sportsman who enjoys running, tennis and golf (although by his own admission his golfing skills are best described as a work in progress), and is currently training for the London Marathon, which he and two friends are running for the Roy Castle Foundation Charity in aid of cancer research.
Peter forms a formidable snooker partnership with squash's Tom Fitzgerald.
An avid Evertonian, he continues a long line of blue VPs (broken only by a brief aberration in 2001!).
In adding his own congratulations, our president-elect Phil Sloan says of his successor "Peter and his family fully recognise the unique qualities, for sports and socialising, that our Club has to offer for all age groups and is keen to continue the progress in development of our facilities that has been made over recent years. Peter's organisation, planning and people skills will be a great asset in helping to move the Club forward in the coming years and make it an even better place for our membership."

Presentation Evening for CCPR Award. (Feb.2007)
Civic leaders, representatives of sports governing bodies, local community sporting links
and local media were among the guests at an evening to celebrate Northern's national recognition in the 2006 Sports Club of the Year awards.
The event was introduced (above) by Radio Merseyside's Alan Jackson.
The award was formally re-presented to Northern president Paul Davies by Tim Lamb,
the chief executive of the Central Council of Physical Recreation.
Northern were congratulated on our award (above) by Alan Jackson, Tim Lamb and the Mayor of Sefton Councillor Thomas Mann.
In response, Paul Davies thanked the many guests who had attended from far and wide.
Our next and previous presidents Phil Sloan and Mike Bishop presented an overview of the diversity of our sporting activities,
with particular emphasis on our sports development and youth initiatives.
They also outlined our plans for the future,
including our current project to integrate with Moor Park tennis club,
releasing their current facility as a base for a local junior football club.
