Summer Ball bowls them over. (Jun.2005)
The Summer Ball was enjoyed by nearly 250 revellers, who danced the night away to a great band in Out of the Blue, and disco from our regular DJ Gary.
Mike Bishop fronted a strong contingent (below) of cricketers past and present, spanning 5 decades of cricket at the club.

The evening attracted a large and appreciative audience, and was capped by a virtuoso performance from comedian Tony Roscoe (pictured right). Proceedings were impartially compered by John Nelson.

Northern achieve Cricket Clubmark status. (Jun.2005)
After a lot of hard work Northern Club were awarded ECB and Sport England Cricket Clubmark status on 20th June.
The Club has always had an extremely active Junior Section, but it is only since the Clubmark criteria were introduced that the key elements of safety, qualified coaches, etc have been fully recognised. Northern now run Friday night coaching sessions for children from 8 years up, and teams at under 9, 11, 13 and 15 level, as well as integrating younger players into the 5 Saturday league sides that are run.
Our coaches are currently engaged in an ongoing programme with local primary schools and we regularly host matches and competitions on behalf of both Sefton area and the LCB, with regional under 9 and 11 festivals due to be held in the next few weeks.
The management and running of the Cricket section has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years, and this is in no small way due to the directions asked for by the Clubmark criteria with which we are happy to comply,

More Sports Awards for Northern. (Jun.2005)
At the Sefton Sports Achievement Awards Dinner, held at the Royal Clifton Hotel in Southport, Northern's squash coach Alan Hendry was voted Sefton's Coach of the Year. The cricket section's scorer, roving reporter and fixtures secretary Alan Majewska collected a richly deserved Senior Commitment award.
Having been voted Sefton Sports Club of the Year on the previous two occasions, this time we were highly commended in the Club of the Year category. Heather Tweedle, recently called up on international squash duty by England, was highly commended in the Female Athlete of the Year category.
Pictured are Heather Tweedle, Alan Majewska, vice president Paul Davies, Alan Hendry and president Mike Bishop. Our congratulations go to all concerned.

Calling all Northern Club Athletes. (May. 2005)
To any male or female club players in our senior squads who train and play on a regular basis, who may be interested in participating in a study. You will all get useful feedback of your bone density, body fat, muscle mass and muscle strength.

My name is Joanne Wallace and I am a Postgraduate Researcher at Liverpool John Moores University. I hope that you will be able to help me.

I am currently conducting research into the body composition of different athletic groups and investigating whether there is any correlation between bone health and the type and intensity of training, health and lifestyle factors. The research involves analysing an individual’s body composition (bone mass, bone density, fat mass, percent body fat and fat free mass) via the use of a Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan, measuring leg strength and evaluating individuals training routines, their health and lifestyle issues via a questionnaire.

Your involvement in the research would mean being available to attend one session at our research institute, which would involve you having 3 low does x-ray scans of your whole body, hip and spine, an isokinetic strength test and the completion a questionnaire. The whole session may approximately take an hour and a half of your time.

Once the data has been collected and analysed I will be able to forward you a summary of the findings. Individuals who have been through similar processes have found the experience to be very informative and valuable for their own personal athletic development.

I am hoping to conduct the investigation from June till September 2005 at your convenience. All information given is strictly confidential and to ensure that I have represented your information accurately before it is submitted within my thesis you will be given the opportunity to check the data. If you are interested in participating in the study or would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Changing Rooms officially re-opened. (Apr.2005)
Sunday 17th April saw the official re-opening of the changing rooms, following the winter's renovation work, with the presentation of the cheque from Sport England.

Volunteering event is outstanding success. (Apr. 2005)
Northern members from all sections turned out in force to paint the town (or at least the club) green and white. The two-day event was organised through England Cricket's Natwest Volunteer programme, enabling the clubhouse, pavilions and outbuildings to receive a much-needed lick of paint.
Thanks to all who turned out, some of whom gave up most or all of their weekend to lend the club a helping hand.

CLUB FORCE 2005

As everyone can see this event was a great success with all the Club’s Buildings having been painted.

A great deal of work was also done inside the Tiffin pavilion which has been completely renovated and cleaned up.

My thanks go to EVERYONE who gave up some time last weekend to help, whether it was for 1 hour or 2 days it all helped.

The members involved are not the type who want to see their names up in lights but special thanks must go to a few people.

Hewletts Butchers for an unbelievable deal on Burgers Sausages and Bacon used to sustain the troops, Dave Finnan, the Caterer, for leaving 2 pans of Curry to eat when we had finished and to John Leary of Firwood and a Club member, for sorting out all our paint requirements at short notice after a fruitless visit to B&Q.

We reckon the job will have cost about £500 in total and have saved the Club at least 10 times that amount.

Once again, my thanks go to you all. It shows what can be achieved when everyone pulls together.

Mike Bishop
President

Heather selected for England. (Mar.2005)
Congratulations to Northern's own Heather Tweedle, who has received an international call-up, to represent England Women's O40's in the Masters Home International Squash Championships, due to take place at Vale Country Club, Hensol in Cardiff on Friday and Saturday 13th and 14th May.

Fire Escape. (Mar.2005)

Darts fly again at Northern. (Mar.2005)
Emily Parr
Our hard-working vice-president Mike Bishop organised another successful darts event. Andy Davies retained his crown, beating Trish Dooley in the final. Of the 32 competitors, and those too late to make the cut, a fine evening of sport and social merriment was had by all (apart from those, below left, reflecting on another poor result at Newcastle). A day of mixed fortunes for the Garcias was confirmed when, in the highlight of the evening, Margi Garcia comprehensively beat son Mark in Round One.

New Vice President for 2005. (Feb.2005)
We are pleased to announce that Paul Davies has accepted the nomination for Vice President at the forthcoming AGM of 2005. A current playing member of the squash section, and onetime occasional cricketer, Paul is a driving force behind our excellent junior squash development program. Our best wishes to Paul, along with wife Sally, and squash prodigies Matt and Kim.

Northern welcomes new caterers. (Jan 2005).
We are pleased to announce that we have appointed Style Catering Ltd as franchisee at Northern.  Top personnel involved are Dave Finnan and his partner Chrissie who currently look after the Catering at Sefton Park CC and the University Guild.  For the present, team meals and pre-booked functions are being catered for, but it is anticipated that bar snacks will be available in a couple of weeks when Dave has found his feet.  Mothers Day is 6th.March and a full 3 course lunch will be available for £9.95. Pre booking will be essential and members should keep an eye on the Club noticeboard where the usual list will appear shortly.  We wish Style Catering every success and trust members will support them.
