Triumph and despair for ladies in twin trophy finals
(Sun 13.April).
On Saturday, the Ladies 1st.XI were triumphant, representing Lancashire
in the North of England Clubs Championship,
and winning the tourament to claim their 4th trophy of the season.
On Sunday, facing Didsbury in the Lancashire Cup final,
Northern took a 2-0 lead, and it was sheer fatigue from an exhausting weekend which prevented a win in normal time.
Didsbury fought back to level, then cruelly to take the trophy on penalty flicks.
Hey girls, promotion, the championship, and 3 other trophies,
and it took a shoot-out in the Lancs Cup final, and one moving pitch in the league, to beat you.
That's some season.
There's a rumour circulating that the team of the year award may need to relocate to the opposite bedside cabinet.

CHAMPIONS. Ladies clinch title.
(15.Mar 2003).
The Ladies 1st.XI crushed rivals Prescot 5-1, to clinch the Lancashire League champions title in style.

back: Rachael Pruden, Kim Beattie, Nikki Johnson, Sarah Bentley, Michelle Rigby, Krissy Debrowsky, Chris McBrien. front: Sophie Gaunt, Kath Thow, Wendy McDowall, Debbie Murphy, Kate Jackson, Emma Gaunt.
The match was over as a contest by half-time, after an awesome first half display produced 4 Northern goals,
and left previously undefeated Prescot shell-shocked.
Northern's early nerves were settled when Emma Gaunt opened the scoring for the home side.
Krissy Debrowski added a second, cutting in from the right.
Prescot managed to pull a goal back, but Sarah Bentley's pass set up Debrowski to restore Northern's 2-goal advantage.
The first half ended with the Prescot goal under constant siege, Debbie Murphy adding a fourth.
The advantage could easily have been doubled in the second half,
with Kate Jackson, Kath Thow, Kim Beattie and Michelle Rigby in total control at the back,
and numerous near misses peppering the Prescot goal up front.
Murphy added just a fifth, before the match ended and the celebrations began.

Northern's second goal, as Krissy Debrowski slots past the Prescot keeper, then turns away with clenched salute.

|
Bet you can't do that again, Krissy ...
|
|
Down and out. Prescot's keeper is left helpless again, as Debbie Murphy has the goal at her mercy ...

The ladies are now promoted
to the succinctly named 'North Territorial Women's Hockey League Feeder League West Division'

ORMSKIRK LADIES HOCKEY CLUB REUNION MATCH
SAT 26TH OCTOBER
NORTHERN LADIES VERSUS ORMSKIRK PAST PLAYERS
A fantastic day was experienced at Northern Hockey Club when Northern Ladies took on the Ormskirk Ladies Past Players. The sunshine came out and graced the astroturf as did approximately 20 former lady members of Ormskirk Hockey Club.
The game started at a frenetic pace with Northern Ladies trying to outwit the previous players, with their experience of playing on astroturf and the speed at which the ball is zipped around. A few goals were scored for Northern, with an exceptional individual goal by Chrissie Dabrowski, before the Ormy girls had chance to draw breath.
However you cannot hide the experience and skill of the Ormy girls and they soon found their feet and adjusted to the new surface and proceeded to scare the pants off Northern. Ormskirk players such as Sally Sketcher, Rosie Almond, Pauline Treanor, Lilac Ashcroft ( Captain) and Lynne Sedley proved to be as determined as ever in the midfield and fought for every tackle. The defence of Jenny Watling, Sarah Lawton and Helen Knight coped admirably despite Northern’s young right winger, Emma Gaunt, having the fastest legs in the North. The forwards consisting of Fiona Hollis, Lynda Glazer, Di Jones, June Constantine, and Jane Odell tried their hardest, even if their minds knew where they wanted to go but their legs wouldn’t get them there quick enough.
Unfortunately, despite some admirable attacks by Ormskirk with Jackie Jones dribbling through five Northern players and then losing sight of the ball under her cleavage, Northern proved to be too strong for Ormskirk and won convincingly.
Ormskirk, however, did have the last say in the matter, with a penalty corner being awarded to them in the dying seconds of the game. The ball was stopped dead in its tracks for Sally Sketcher to brilliantly flick the ball over the top of the goalkeepers head right into the top of the net to tremendous whoops of joy from Ormskirk’s army of supporters on the sideline.
All in all, every member past and present agreed that the day and meal at night were a great success and a wonderful tribute to the enjoyment and satisfaction that we have all taken from Ormskirk Ladies Hockey Club. During the meal, a special presentation was given to Peter Burman who has been President of the Club for all 35 years of our history and is still our first team umpire. WELL DONE !

Ladies win Lancashire 7-a-side.
(15.Sep 2002)
Well done, the Ladies, who won the Lancashire Clubs 7-a-side tournament,
held at Liverpool University.
We won on penalty flicks after full time, with it going to sudden death on the flicks.
We now have a great big trophy but unfortunately Lancs didn't have it with them.
And we beat Wigan 1st team, so got one back for the cricketers!
