Northern through to Cup Finals. (Aug. 2006)
Well done to the 1sts, who won through the semi-final of the Littlewoods Gaming Knockout Trophy (ie the Liverpool Comp knockout) and will now meet Bootle or Ainsdale in the final at Moor Park on Sunday 3rd September.
In the semi-final, Northern overcame Wallasey by 121 runs. Northern's total of 258-7 was built around a fine innings by Karl Brown (above), who hit 70, with opening partner Jack Kelliher contributing 36. John Wildman (below) pundered 42, with Carl Hey hitting 30, and James Cole snatching a lightening 21 from the final deliveries. In reply, Wallasey were dismissed for 137, with Carl Hey taking 4-30 and Nick Woods 3-25.
Also through to their respective finals are our 2nd and 3rd teams, against Bootle and Birchfield Park. Both finals are away, and take place on Sunday 20th August.

Captain Mark takes over Hong Kong. (Aug. 2006)
Postcard from our globe-trotting former captain, Mark 'the Legend' Edwards.
'Glad to see Northern following up last season's success with a cup final appearance (and Hightown pushing for promotion)! We are gearing up for the new season here in Hong Kong - beginning September. I have been made captain of Hong Kong Cricket Club for the season ahead and hope to follow up our league and cup success of last year! The club has reciprocal links to the MCC and Melbourne CC - so it's a great honour for myself ... and a really good standard of cricket!
Last season's professional was Philip Defreitas - a great guy and still a great player. This year Steve Stead is joining us from the MCC Groundstaff (plays at Gloucestershire).'
If anyone out there is planning an overseas tour, Mark recommends the weekend of 11-12 November for a trip to Hong Kong, as the International Sixes are held at Kowloon CC. Fabulous weekend! Plenty of cricket to play and sights to see. If there are any visitors from the Comp, let Mark know, and look him up.

Under Fifteens take MYC Trophy. (Jul. 2006)
A big ‘well done’ to our lads, who triumphed in the Merseyside Youth Cricket Under 15 tournament. The competition is in Twenty 20 format, and has been running during the first half of the season. Having made it through the league stages, and won tricky quarter and semi final ties, Northern claimed the trophy by defeating Mossley Hill in the final. Skipper James Morrissey is pictured with the trophy.
Northern totalled 118 for 5. Paddy Reade top scored with a fine 48, and Myles Martin hit a whirlwind 30. Thanks to some tight bowling and good fielding, Mossley Hill reached 107 for 3 in reply, with J Evans unbeaten on 52. Carlos Gosling was the pick of the Northern bowlers, conceeding just 9 runs in his 4 overs.

Northern stages the World Cup. (Jul. 2006)
Our junior coaching sessions for this year ended with a ‘world cup’ round-robin tournament, spread over the last three sessions, culminating in a grand final between the two highest placed teams. All the children, who have been attending the highly popular coaching sessions since the beginning of May, were divided into teams representing the cricket playing nations, and provided with team colours for the occasion.
South Africa and India were the two sides to emerge from the qualifying stages, pictured above with match umpire Les Knowles, and it was India who triumphed in a keenly fought final.
The winning Indian team are pictured, left, with the trophy and their medals.
Thanks to Carl Hey who coordinated the sessions and competition, to the many volunteers who helped with the coaching, and to the hundred and fifty plus children who enjoyed the sessions. See you again next year.

Great Moments in Sport - number 846192. (Jul. 2006)
Always the lithe athletic figure, his was a playing career sadly and prematurely curtailed by the advent of the bowling machine. Not to be denied, the white playing slacks are these days replaced by the smartly tailored white coat and the MCUA badge, as the familiar form continues to grace the cricket clubs of the district.

Northern host LCB under 9 Tournament. (Jun. 2006)
Northern played host to a fifteen team Merseyside Cricket Partnership Under 9's ‘Kwik Cricket’ tournament, organised by Lancashire Cricket Board. The winners Widnes are pictured above with some of the other competitors, along with LCB's Paul Bryson and his fellow organisers. Says Paul 'The standard of play was very high and the team spirit and teamwork was a joy to watch'.
The Northern team won 3 of its 4 first round matches, losing only to Widnes. The team then went on to finish runners up in the tournament, reaching the final only to miss out to the same opponents, after defeating Alder in the semi-finals.

Research into Batting Technique. (Jun. 2006)
I am a current research student at Liverpool John Moores University. At the moment we are conducting research on cricket batting that has been funded by the English Cricket Board. We have designed a lab-based test to measure what information cricket batsman use when facing fast and spin bowling. To do this batsman will be asked to play shots to life-size images that are projected onto a large screen. While they are doing this we ask batsman to wear an eye-movement system that records where the batsman is looking during the task.
At the moment we are recruiting players from clubs in the Merseyside area that play 1st team cricket. If you are interested in taking part or require any further information please contact me via e-mail or phone. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Bedsers from the archives. (Jun. 2006)
The news came recently that Eric Bedser, of Surrey's famous cricketing twins, had passed away.
Here's a vintage snap of Alec and Eric Bedser on a visit to Northern at the peak of their careers.
