Under 9's overcome Formby. (Jun. 2004)
|
Northern under 9's played out a closely contested encounter with Formby,
emerging victorious from the two-match kwik cricket fixture.
The team is pictured with coach Derek Blanchard.
|
|
Above, Wattsy and Sloany display immaculate pedigree.
Scotty, left, tests the Formby batting with a moon ball.
Below, Sloany beats the bat to find keeper Jacko's gloves.
The team now progresses to represent Sefton in next week's regional contest at Northern.

Under 13's into Vase Competition. (Jun. 2004)
|
The under 13's have completed their preliminary programme and have finished 3rd in their group,
which qualifies them for the Vase competition following the regrouping of the teams for the 2nd half of the season.
Emphatic victories over Hightown and Rainford were balanced by a thumping defeat at the hands of Old Xavs and an unfortunate defeat by NALGO when 4 overthrows, with 4 boys missing the ball, did not help.
Outstanding batting performances have come from Jonny Davies and Sachin Sharma although Matty Thompson, Pat Reade, Daniel Boyle (captain) and Rob Anderson have also scored their share.
The side is awash with bowlers and the problem has been in choosing who to actually bowl. This week Carlos Gosling returned the outstanding figures of 4-3-1-3 and the 1 run conceded was a no ball when he overstepped by at least 6 feet!

Blast from the Past - Dave Rowlands.
Dave emailed to say that he 'Just came across the website' and writes ...
I was a member at Northern in the 70's , so hopefully there's a few people who remember me !!
Mike Bishop, John Watts to name two.
I'm down living in Bath
and working in Bristol and London for the Audit Commission. married to Sarah
and with children Sophie(13) and Jack (10). Still playing the odd game of
cricket - mainly for the Forty Club. I'm hoping to come up to play against Merchants on 1 July - maybe I might see you?
I remember bumping into Mike Bishop at Bath CC when he was working up in Swindon - how is he? What's happened to Geoff Tweedle, Tony Meehan etc !!

Lancashire and former England spinner Chris Schofield (below left) was among the bowlers,
as James Marshall hit 64 on his debut against Northop Hall.

Steve Parry also showed promise on his competitive debut, before (left) falling caught behind to the Lancashire man.

|
Carl Hey (above) played some attractive forcing shots off Schofield, before (right) edging to slip.

Vicar signs new striker. (Apr. 2004)
|
LFC footballer Louise Hastie played her first game for Northern,
hitting 17 for the Vicar's XI in the league fixture against Caldy.
Despite this tactical advice from the resolute Mike Lees (see above left),
Louise wisely opted to strike it to all corners.

Geoff Miller and Jimmy Bright entertain. (20.Mar. 2004)
|
Former England all-rounder and current Test selector Geoff Miller (right) was guest speaker at the cricket section's Sports Dinner.
34 caps for England and he was ... excellent on the night.
Comedy maestro Jimmy Bright added his brand of dry humour to the occasion.

The Great Hawk-Eye Debate.
Dear Northern.
I am a third year student at University College Worcester,
doing research that looks into how the audience of televised cricket
are affected by the use of new technology, particularly Hawk-Eye. I am
hosting a website forum, that gives people the chance to join in on various discussions such as
"Should Hawk-Eye be used to make LBW decisions?".
I would really appreciate it if you could click onto
hawkeye-forum.com
to take part in this forum as it adds to the value of my research.
Thank you for your time, Neil Gibbons.
