School of Excellence officially opened. (Aug. 2006)
On Saturday 26th August, David Lamb, the President of The British Crown Green Bowling Association,
visited the Northern Club to open the “School of Excellence" for junior crown green bowlers.
Said David “It is so good and encouraging to see young person playing bowls.
Many people think it is a sport for old people.
It is a sport that old people can play but youth is the vibrant heart of the sport”.
David then completed the formal opening ceremony by bowling the opening end.
Also attending from the B.C.G.B.A. were John Crowther the Chief Executive, Ken Jarvis Past President,
Ian Thompson National Coach and Examiner and Brian Livingstone Merseyside Junior Development Manager
pictured with David and Northern's Russel Dove.
The “School of Excellence” has been formed to instruct children from 9 to 16 years of age, how to play crown green bowls.
The opening was well attended by 27 local children and their parents.
Also present were children from the junior sections of The Brooke Hotel in Crosby and The Royal British Legion in Formby.
Following the opening ceremony the Northern Club Instructors supervised the children’s coaching on the number one green.
The more advanced youngsters played a limited end knockout competition on the second green.
Mathew Walsh from Formby Royal British Legion was the eventual winner and presented with £10 prize money by David Lamb.
Shaun Colbourne from The Brooke Hotel was the runner up who received the second prize of £5.
Following the winners presentation, Paul Wilkinson the Development Manager for Sefton Sports Council
presented Russel Dove the School of Excellence coordinator with the “Active Club Award”
accreditation plaque for being a safe and child friendly club.
Russel accepted the plaque on behalf of the bowling sections.
Russel said “The Northern Club is proud to be the first Club in Sefton to receive accreditation in all sports,
Crown Green Bowls, Cricket, Squash and Hockey. Members of both bowling sections have worked very hard, as a team,
to get this achievement”
After the School dispersed, the guests were joined by the instructors for a light buffet lunch,
after which Paul Davies, the President, thanked the guests
and congratulated the bowling sections on achieving accreditation.
The School of Excellence at The Northern Club will be open each Saturday morning throughout each bowling season.
Next year we have a development plan to increase interest in the school.

Official Opening for School of Excellence. (Aug. 2006)
On Saturday 26th Aug 2006 at 10.30am, the Northern Club will be formally opening our “School of Excellence”
for young boys and girls to learn the skill of Crown Green Bowling.
David Lamb, the British Crown Green Bowling Association President, and other members of the B.G.G.B.A are due to attend.
Local press and media are invited.
Crown Green Bowling was ridiculed and then banned in this country by King Henry VIII
until the ban was lifted in 1845.
The ban was imposed because of the game's strong appeal to young people
in preference to archery because battles were not won by bowling at the enemy.
Our School will be operating on Saturdays mornings between 10.30am and 12.00am
for children between the ages of 9 to 16 years of age.
We hope it will attract many young people who would never normally get the opportunity to be instructed and play Crown Green Bowls.
We have 12 volunteer members who have been CRB cleared, trained and certified by the British Crown Green Bowling Association as qualified instructors.
On the opening day, we hope that the Northern Club Bowling Section will also be awarded accreditation by Sefton Sports and Leisure Council.
This will make The Northern Club the first club in the country to be accredited in all four sports.
Accreditation is the highest standard that parents and carers rely on to know their child is being instructed in a protected and safe environment.
